Ah! My Goddess Ch. 272 Manga Review

Ah! My Goddess Manga/Oh My Goddess! Manga
ああっ女神さまっ Chapter 272

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Ah! My Goddess Ch. 272Belldandy ends up collapsing due to the power drain on her, leading the little girl mazoku to reveal that she’d begun to think the mazoku efforts might have been in vain, but no longer. She explains to Keiichi that the mazoku could not absorb so much power from the goddesses without having them first pass through the various rooms to start the draining process. As such, she reasons that the only paths available to Keiichi are to kill her (or Belldandy do it) by taking the key and exiting the room or do nothing, in which case Belldandy becomes a husk.

Keiichi decides the girl must die but Belldandy won’t allow him to open the door since she doesn’t want someone she cares for killing another. Keiichi says he feels the same and reaches into Belldandy’s bosom to retrieve the key. The girl mazoku smirks at Keiichi’s choice but doesn’t believe he’ll actually go through with it. She taunts him a bit and the girl mazoku resigns herself to the fact that she’s going to be killed, but she will have been of use to “her.”

One of Belldandy’s rings glow and as Keiichi goes to turn the key in the lock and open the door, killing the mazoku girl, Belldandy gets up and puts her hand on Keiichi’s. As the astonished mazoku girl  wonders how Belldandy is standing, Belldandy confesses she doesn’t know but they need to get out of the way. With that, Mokkurkalfi crashes through the wall, riding Glühendes Herz and asking where her sister, Ehwaz, is. Unfortunately, Mokkurkalfi has knocked her older sister to the ground.

Thoughts/Review:

Its about time that the little girl mazoku got a name.  Sheeze. That’s one thing that has often frustrated me about some Japanese manga or anime — not naming a character for a very long time for no specific story reason.

I had forgotten about Glühendes Herz and I find that interesting.  I never even questioned it after Slyum was defeated, which is the last time Glühendes Herz had been seen with Keiichi on top. That was in chapter 261, after which Hild’s broom disappears once Keiichi falls off due to lactic acid in his muscles. Now, why did I so easily forget about Glühendes Herz?  I think Fujishima-sensei pulled a sleight of hand here, much like a magician does. He makes Glühendes Herz’s departure masked by having Keiichi have his lactic acid problem followed by the comedic “I got to go to the bathroom badly” chapter. Then by giving us some Skuld love in her arc against Mokkurkalfi, I no longer gave a crap about Glühendes Herz.  Therefore, I never even conceived of the broom being the facilitator of an escape from Ehwaz’s trap even though I was sure they would not kill her.

Now, why is Mokkurkalfi riding Glühendes Herz?  This smacks of something else going on; some big picture that I’m not seeing.  Clearly, the broom has to be working with Mokkurkalfi and likely Ehwaz. I figured a while back that Ehwaz might be working for Hild and now I’m thinking that again. Otherwise, why would Mokkurkalfi be on Hild’s broom?  Of course, there could be some other reason to be revealed so we’ll have to wait and see.

It has been so long since I’ve reread the Ah! My Goddess manga from the start that I don’t remember for sure when (or even if) Keiichi gave Belldandy a ring.  I’m thinking he did (I know he did in the anime) and I don’t feel like going down to the basement and getting my A!MG manga out of storage (someone needs more bookcases, apparently).  Assuming he did, then Belldandy’s rejuvenation will be the “power of love.”  If not, well I’m not sure what’s going on.

Speaking of Keiichi and Belldandy, Fujishima-sensei had Keiichi do the unthinkable by having him reach down her blouse. If only that were a sign that Keiichi and Belldandy would have a relationship where they could kiss and snuggle.

So, a way now exists for Keiichi and Belldandy to move along, but what about Skuld and Urd?  What exactly is Hagal up to?  Just questions that remain to be answered.

    Yes, Keiichi gave Bell a ring, way back in volume 1. And one thing I like about the manga is that throughout all of the volumes, that ring has always been there on her left hand.

    Belldandy is wearing several rings. The ring featured in this chapter is not the one Keiichi gave to Belldandy but a magical ring.

    I was thinking this was the case, but the original OVA’s story put so much emphasis on the ring that I knew it was there, but at the same time, my memories of a manga ring were cloudy at best. ^_^;;;

    I’m sure you are right. Its sad that I didn’t pay attention. 🙁

    From? (Or is that a major spoiler?)

    Mokkurkalfi riding Glühendes Herz does not mean that they are allies, only that they have a common goal of getting into the room. Gluhendes may be able to get into the room, but not the knowledge how to do so. While Mokkurkalfi might know how to get in but is not able to use that knowledge.

    As for Fujishima-sensei using slight of hand, is that whats been going on this whole arc, that Hild’s enemies been fighting using misdirection all the time. The real question is how will Urd counter these tricks. In has to be Urd since she is the only Goddess there that can use deception (I just reread Urd’s test for 1st class goddess arc).

    I feel a little better now about my guess in the last chapter review… I was starting to feel like a complete pre-vert for thinking sensei might have K1 do the unthinkable. But I definitely wouldn’t have guessed the true means of the last-minute save for the girl, either… I’d be surprised if anyone did. (^_^)

    Wrt whether this means K1 will be willing to touch Belldandy in a non-platonic manner henceforth, I agree. It’d be nice to imagine them being more mature (not ecchi, mature) about it, but I’d be startled if we ever see so much as an explicit conversational reference to something that happens off-screen (except perhaps in an epilogue where we see Belldandy pregnant).

    But I could definitely see K1 almost literally wanting to commit seppuku to apologize later on, and Belldandy telling him they need to talk, because at another time and place she might not mind.

    Well, I’m just thinking about Hild and the possibility that not everyone may really be on Hagal’s side.

    The thing about Fujishima-sensei is he can make it up as he goes. ^_^;;;

    Well, especially if Urd and Skuld learn of it — death may seem a better option. ^_~
